Takes one to make one.

Post by bor MC » Wed Dec 23, 2020 5:00 pm

I'm open to all critique, always! But this is my first "personal" CNC machine in nearly a decade of contracted builds and operation for hire. It is not exactly what I want it to be, but it will be enough to test new drive components and cut other parts for it's own upgrade.

I'll be testing this with both the Buildbotics controller and the Openbuilds Blackbox. Each has it's own advantages and short comings, so look for the sperate reviews on my facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/bearbuiltnc.

Design Specs:

-Overall Footprint, 60"x120"
-Max Cut Capacity, 50"x100"x4"
-Mech Drive, [4] NEMA 24, 439 oz-in stepper motors
-Linear Drive, Custom Rack and Pinion X/Y axis. [OB] Lead Screw Z axis
-Work holding, Milled Baltic Birch ply vacuum plenum powered by a 6hp canister-shop vacuum
-Spindle/Cutting Head, Bosch Colt or Dewalt 611 trim router

Construction:

-3/4" Plywood table frame and top
-[OB] V slot extrusions for gantry and rails
-[OB] plates, wheels, and hardware where applicable. Custom phenolic XX parts elsewhere

Excellent work. I hope you'll show some pictures of things you make with it.

Been spending the holiday break getting the new machine wired up and ready to run. All that's left is hooking up the limit switches and main power line. Had to run a separate 12v power supply for the switches from OpenBuilds and was lucky enough to find some diodes at a local Radio Shack (yep we still have one). Hope to be testing and tuning in a week or so.
