Static IP address for wifi and ethernet

Post by rtkracht » Wed Jun 02, 2021 7:29 am

Is there a way to set a static IP address for both wifi and ethernet ports? My wifi is really slow in my shop and I've setup a switch between my laptop and BB controller to use when I can't get things to update through wifi. The ethernet address seems to stay the same (169.254.162.169) since I've set this method up, but will it stay at this address long term?

The IP address is assigned by your network router. Most network routers allow you to assign a static IP address to a particular MAC address. Once you do that, It should always be the same.

I was afraid you were going to say that. I've got an older router and it doesn't support that capablility. I've got lot's of cameras and 2 NVRs on the network and I'd rather not take the time right now configuring a new router. I'll keep it in mind when I replace the router. Thanks for the reply.

Hi,
This can also be done by making the Raspberry pi always use a specific IP-address. There is a lot of guides online for doing exactly this. For instance https://www.makeuseof.com/raspberry-pi-set-static-ip/
I would agree it is more tidy to have the network router assign the same IP-adress every time, but this also works in most cases.
