Overheat Notifications

Post by tmadrms » Tue Jun 16, 2020 8:36 pm

Found a neat feature. Was 83° in the garage last night and kept getting overheat pi message. What ambient temp will this run up to? Might need to add some active cooling.

What is the serial number on your controller?

Hi Doug!

000165

And to clarify, I was being sincere that it's a cool feature that it notifies you that it's happening. When I reread this it could have been interpreted as snarky. It kept going on without issue, but the notifications came up every other minute or so and stayed for a minute or two then same cycle.

Your message was fine.

I wanted your serial number because we started putting heat sinks on the Raspberry Pi's at around serial number 110. The heat sink is a big chunk of aluminum that is connected to the RPi with thermal tape and is in thermal contact with the lid of the enclosure using thermal grease. With this heat sink, the heat dissipates nicely through the lid of the case.

It's possible that your heat sink has come loose and is no longer making good thermal contact. Would you mind taking the lid off to verify that the heat sink is making contact with the RPi with thermal tape and the lid with thermal grease?

The RPi generates more heat when it is under heavy load. Things that load it are gcode programs with a lot of small moves, running video, wifi connections, and running a local head. Also, some of our earlier software versions were less efficient in handling the video stream than our later software. Please make sure you are on the latest software version.

The thermometer icon on the local monitor comes on when the RPi hits 70C (I think). When that happens the CPU starts to shed loads and then the RPi begins to cool. This should not affect cutting, but your video stream may stop. The RPi will shut down altogether at 85C and this will stop everything.

We have not seen users having overheating issues with the heat sink installed. Assuming you have the heat sink, you might want to blow some are over the top of the controller. That will really cool it down.

Cool, I'll pull the lid off and make sure it's still connected. It is mounted vertically so maybe it has come loose? I am running latest firmware, as well. It also was a pretty hefty 3D cut so there were a lot of smaller moves grouped together. It's good to know that it will kill off less important processes before killing the cut! I do receive a fair amount of out of memory errors both on the RPi HDMI and remote connectivity. I actually see it far less remotely than on the local display.
